Frequently Asked
Questions

What is a GLP-1 medication?

GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are a group of licensed medications which are clinically proven to help weight loss. They have long been established in the treatment of diabetes but their potent weight loss effects mean that they represent a new way to lose weight safely and quickly.

How does Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro work for weight loss?

They work mimicking the action of a natural hormone (glucagon-like peptide) in the body, which leads to:

  • Lowering of blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin production in the pancreas and reducing glucose production in the liver.
  • Slowing down the movement of food through our intestines helping us to feel fuller for longer.
  • Increase in the amount of energy-burning brown fat in our bodies, which increases our basal metabolic rate. This effectively increases the number of calories we burn when we’re doing nothing.
  • Enhancement of the signals in our brain that tell us we are full, meaning that we will want to stop eating sooner.
  • Reduction the signals in our brain that cause cravings.
How do I get prescribed GLP-1 medications (Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro)?

Will I have to follow a strict diet when taking GLP-1 medications?
  • The good news is no, you don’t have to follow a strict diet when taking these medications. They work to naturally reduce your appetite and cravings for food giving you freedom from dieting and weight loss that works.
  • You can enhance the weight loss effects with simple diet and lifestyle changes. Our Health Coaching Team will guide you every step of the way.
How do weight loss pills work?

There are two main types of weight loss pills: Rybelsus and Orlistat

Rybelsus (Semaglutide)

  • Clinically proven GLP-1 medication licensed in the UK for weight loss. It works by mimicking the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide, which promotes weight loss by reducing appetite and cravings, improving blood sugar control and boosting your metabolism.
  • Once daily tablet.

Orlistat

  • Clinically proven weight loss medication which works to reduce the absorption of dietary fat by inhibiting an enzyme called lipase. It is licensed in the UK for weight loss.
  • Three times a day tablet, taken with meals.
How much weight can I lose?

All of our medical weight loss treatments are clinically proven to help you lose weight. The amount of weight loss you can expect depends partly on which medication is right for you:

  • Weight loss pills – 5-10% of your body weight over 3 months
  • Weight loss injections – 5-20% of your body weight over 3 months
How quickly does GLP-1 medication (Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro) work?
  • Many people will start to notice the effects of these medications within the first few days of starting treatment. As the medication starts to affect the receptors in your brain, you will likely notice that you are feeling fuller more quickly and your cravings for foods have lessened. As you start to take in fewer calories than you need you will start using your fat stores for energy and as a result lose weight.
  • Over the next few weeks and months, in partnership with simple lifestyle changes, you will notice steady weight loss as your metabolism is boosted and the weight loss effects of the medications build.
What are the side effects of GLP-1 medication?
  • GLP-1 medications are safe and well-tolerated meaning that most people won’t experience serious side effects.
  • The most common side effects are gastrointestinal e.g. nausea, diarrhoea or constipation. These often wear off as your body gets used to the medication.
  • More serious side effects are uncommon and include pancreatitis or gallstone formation.
  • Detailed information about the possible adverse effects of your medication will be sent to you with the packaging. Please take time to read these carefully.
  • If you have any questions or want to discuss side effects with one of our doctors, please schedule a call with us.
